The spot lights cut through the smoke
as Zhang Zi Duan 张子端, Zhao Yin Qi 赵音奇 and I were introduced
and made our entrance onto the stage. The entire studio was
filled – over 500 people. All of the lights were on. The big
boom camera was swinging over the crowd. Producers were scrambling
around and camera men were taking up their positions. I was
nervous but I was having too much fun with the whole thing.
This one thought kept going through my head, “A. You are a TV
talk show host. B. Today you are a TV game show host. C. You
are a TV game show host in the People’s Republic of China. D.
How did any of this happen? E. Oh god, did you zip your fly?”
The answer to F was unfortunately no!
My name is Keith Francis Gallinelli
and you all know me as Gai Shan Ding. Since June, I have been
the host of Small Talk at JETV. It all started, as most things
seem to for foreigners, at a bar. I was at Blowing in the Wind
with some friends when a young girl sat down next to me. She
told me she worked for a TV station, so I decided to chew her
ear off and tell her all of my ideas for TV shows that I wanted
to do. When she left I had no idea that within two weeks I would
be sitting in that same fifth floor studio taping my first episode
as host of Small Talk.
Small
Talk
I have been impressed by all of the
people of JETV and all of the crew of Small Talk. We have traveled
together to Shanghai, lived in hotel rooms together, searched
in vain for clothes that fit my fat body together, edited the
shows together, translated the English together. They have helped
me learn Chinese, I hope I have help them learn some new English.
As a foreigner living in China, I often feel just that – foreign.
I stand out in a crowd – my bald head, big belly, big feet,
green eyes. My family is on the other side of the planet and
I only can see them once a year. But coming to Small Talk has
me feel a bit less foreign, everyone has made me feel welcome
and like part of the team.
I hope in the future Small Talk and
all of JETV can have great success and great fun. I promise
to do my part – learn about the Chinese TV viewer’s interests,
improve my performance, make the show better and better, and
most importantly to zip my fly! I am proud and honored to be
a part of the JETV team.
